Art or Crime?

Art or Crime?

Here is my latest ACEO, my comment on a growing trend in society... is graffiti "art" or "crime"?

Graffiti artists every where tag walls, spray subways, and draw all over their blackbooks. I realize that your corner grocer probably doesn't want to come to work one morning to see his beautiful white wall covered in graffiti, and a lot of young people DO it simply because of rebellion, but it is not fair to lump all graffiti into that one category.

If you look at it closely, you'll see line and form used very carefully. You'll see colors blended and stark against one another. You will begin to depict style, and tell one artist from the other. I do not use the term artist sparingly. I know that these people take pride in their hard work, just like a sculptor or scenic painter would.

Take the popularity of Basquiat, for example. His work was against the very society that adopted him.

There is room for graffiti, it is not all garbage and done to "mess things up". Seriously, the next time you're out and about, take a good look at the side of that building or decrepit fence... you're partaking in an art gallery experience without paying the admittance fee.

Appreciate art for all it's worth, for remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Yes, it's drizzling today here in Pacifica, CA. But it's a little funny... a little rain really brings people down here. They don't want to do anything, and if they do, they bring umbrellas like it's a downpour. LOL- they should come to LI sometimes during an actual rain storm. :)
Anyway, been busy! Yesterday, I ordered business cards with my artwork on them, should get here in 3 days. I've already chatted with people here and there, and there are many tattoo shops looking to buy flash art if it's good enough. I haven't sold anything to tattoo shops in a couple of years, so it's time to see what I can crank out.
I also sent my resume to a local t-shirt shop. I would really love to get into a job where I can actually utilize my Graphic Design degree for once. So, fingers crossed!

I don't know if I'm ever going to get used to walking around in just a sweatshirt in January... but with the reports I'm hearing from back in New York, I know that it's freezing for you guys! Anyway, here are some more pics... don't worry, I've shrunk them down to viewable size.

This is the view from Kennedy airport on New Year's Eve... if you look carefully enough, you can see the snow through the window.

Here I am at the beach with Ben's sister Candice, who couldn't wait to show me around! Ben has already lived here in Pacifica before.

Here are some pictures of the cliffs which are also just 5 minutes from our apartment.

Here are some dogs in the park right by our house. What I love about being here is that people are outside, doing things. In fact, Ben's sister doesn't even have t.v. When you're here, you'd rather be outside!

This is the view from our apartment!

Here is a closer picture of the pier from the last picture. Sometimes, the waves crash so high the water comes up as high as the pier.

And finally, here is the atrium on the first floor of our apartment. The whole place used to be a hotel, and it's just like staying on vacation to be here.

More to come later...

Today is 7 months that Ben and I have been married! It is hard to believe that time goes so fast... but I've never been happier in my life. AND... we are now living in Pacifica, CA! It is a nice, Pacific Ocean coastal town on the outskirts of San Francisco. We arrived 2 days ago and already we are having a blast. Getting used to the time zone change takes a bit (we are 3 hours behind New York), but it is a lovely place and we are thrilled to be here. Just last night we climbed up a huge hill until we were almost level with the top of the Golden Gate Bridge and hung out there a while, just taking in the sights.

Here we are, at the beach just 5 minutes from where we live!

Well, that's it for now.
Yes, you read right... I am about 2 months pregnant right now, and we couldn't be happier. It's been nearly 13 years since I last took this adventure, so it's all pretty new to me again. I'm doing good though... only got really sick once so far. Having my vitamins at night helps with that.

We don't know what we're having yet... but I'm hoping it's a little girl. Anyhow, my time is short, so I'll go for now. Hope every one is doing great!

The most interesting thing, or the one to get used to? Sleeping with someone. He hogs the bed. Which I don't mind... I'm cool with my little side of the bed, except it's HOT out, and he keeps hugging me in his sleep. Yes, I know it's adorable... but I can't stand being hot. :)

I'll be starting a new job next week as a CNA in a nursing home in Sayville. I'm excited because the place actually looks like it's run decently (hard to find in nursing homes) and the pay is over 15 dollars an hour. Which I can really use right now because these gas prices are kicking my butt.

You know how sometimes people on your friend's list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy mine below, erase my answers putting yours in their place then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration! One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.

1. First name: Jennifer
2. Age: 32
3. Location: Long Island, NY
4. Hometown: Bethpage... at least that's where they tell me I was born.
5. Occupation: Certified Nursing Aide... and now, a wife!
6. Partner: Ben
7. Kids: David, and maybe... who knows?
8. Brothers/Sisters: Matt, Elijah, and Nick... in that order.
10. List the 3-5 biggest things going on in your life:

(1) Obviously the fact that I just got married. How can I even type the words? It seems so non-chalant, but I'm still amazed, and in bliss. Utter bliss.

(2) Unfortunately, I've found myself drinking a bit lately. I'm going to have to cut that out. It's disgusting, even if I don't get drunk.

(3) Trying to find peace between my family and the fact that I got married so soon, and without them there. The find little comfort in the fact that there is yet to be a ceremony... they are hurt.

11. Parents: Cheryl and George
12. Who are some of your closest friends?: Tina and Bernice, I'd have to say.
13. Do you drink/smoke?: Drink yes, no smoke.
14. Tattoos/Piercings: Tat of a bandaid on my lower calf with David's initials, and several ear holes I've done myself after the inital ones.

It's as if I found something that was lost, something I should have had to make me whole, and now I have it. And that is what love is, when it is real. It makes you the real you... the you that you were truly meant to be. And it is a beautiful, smiling me.
